Winbox uses a proprietary protocol to communicate with the router. In older versions (including the 2.2.x series), this protocol had documented vulnerabilities where authentication data was not handled as securely as it should have been.

Version was released during the mature phase of the "Winbox v2" era. At this stage, MikroTik was actively refining the user interface and optimizing the protocol for faster data transfer and better handling of RouterOS configurations. It predates the major architectural shift seen in Winbox v3, which eventually introduced 64-bit support and significant protocol changes.
