The story is set in a fictionalised socialist state during the 1970s. Mu-gwang (played by Yeon Woo-jin) is a young, disciplined soldier who lands a coveted job as a cook in the household of a powerful Division Commander (Jo Sung-ha). Mu-gwang is deeply driven by the desire to bring honor and financial stability to his family.
