However, the writing process was fractured. Frontman Corey Taylor was absent for much of the early sessions, channeling his energy into his side project Stone Sour. When he returned, he brought with him the raw material of a shattered psyche. Taylor was navigating a painful divorce, battling depression without the crutch of substance abuse. The result is an album that feels less like a collection of singles and more like a descent into a fever dream. The recording, which took place at the historic EastWest Studios in Hollywood between November 2018 and April 2019, saw the band work with producer Greg Fidelman.
