At its heart, "Los Ricos También Lloran" is a classic rags-to-riches love story, but with all the melodramatic twists fans of the genre adore. The story begins with Mariana Villarreal, a young woman living a sheltered life on a ranch with her alcoholic, bedridden father. After her father's death, Mariana is thrown out of her home by her cruel stepmother, left alone and penniless. In desperation, she travels to Mexico City, hoping to find her godmother. Fate intervenes when she saves the life of Don Alberto Salvatierra, a wealthy patriarch who has just suffered a heart attack.
