There is only one official model that plays VCDs without any extras:
Early PS1 models (SCPH-1001 through SCPH-7501) featured a Parallel I/O port on the back. Companies manufactured external cartridges, often called "VCD Movie Cards" or "PS1 Video CD Adapters."
