Fans have speculated that the song may be about a person, a place, or even an abstract concept. Despite the ambiguity, the track's dreamy, anthemic quality has made it a fan favorite.
Fans eagerly waited for the song to appear on Viva la Vida , but when the album was released in 2008, "Famous Old Painters" was nowhere to be found. Initially, there were rumors it would be included on the companion EP, Prospekt's March , but that tracklist also omitted it. It seemed the song had been permanently shelved.
