We flashback to 1819. The Essex leaves Nantucket harbor. First Mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) clashes with the inexperienced Captain Pollard. Then comes the nightmare: a massive albino sperm whale, seemingly intelligent and vengeful, attacks the ship not once but twice, sinking it.
