The last decade has seen an explosion of trans representation. From Laverne Cox on Orange is the New Black (the first trans person on the cover of TIME magazine) to Elliot Page’s coming out, trans stories are now being told by trans creators. Documentaries like Disclosure (2020) critique Hollywood’s history of trans villainy while celebrating new authentic portrayals. This media renaissance is inseparable from the broader LGBTQ push for “nothing about us without us.”
This culture of radical care has reshaped how all queer people view relationships. It de-centers the nuclear family and blood lineage, replacing it with an ethic of intentionality . For many young cisgender queers, the trans model of chosen family has become the ideal, not the exception.
Transgender individuals face higher rates of unemployment, housing insecurity, and healthcare discrimination compared to cisgender LGB individuals.
