The R-8's success led to several variations. The , released in 1992, offered greatly expanded internal memory (doubling user patterns from 100 to 200) and increased its internal sample ROM from 67 to 199 sounds by integrating the content of several popular expansion cards. For producers who didn't need the sequencer or pads, Roland also released the R-8M in 1990, a 2U rackmount version that boasted three front-facing ROM card slots, allowing for even greater sonic expansion.
