The telenovela begins with Dulce María, a poor but kind-hearted girl who lives with her grandmother in a small village. She meets and falls in love with a young man named Leonardo (played by Eduardo Capetillo), but their social differences and the disapproval of his family force them apart. When Leonardo's pregnant girlfriend, Iliana (played by Ana Patricia Rojo), dies shortly after giving birth, Dulce María is approached by Leonardo's mother, Vivian (played by Sylvia Pasquel), to become the surrogate mother for the couple's child.
