The contemporary popular entertainment industry is dominated by a small cohort of legacy studios (Disney, Warner Bros., Universal) and new technology-driven entrants (Netflix, Amazon, Apple). This paper argues that while these studios operate under the veneer of creative risk-taking, their core production strategies have coalesced around two risk-mitigating pillars: franchise intellectual property (IP) and vertical integration . Through case studies of Marvel Studios (Disney) and the Stranger Things franchise (Netflix), this paper demonstrates how these strategies generate economic stability and cultural saturation but also produce aesthetic homogenization and new forms of labor precarity.
