On 5 March 2009, Justice John Scurfield ruled that Vince Li was not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder. Both the prosecution and the defence agreed that Li was suffering from schizophrenia at the time of the attack and that he did not appreciate that his actions were morally wrong.
