The game’s story takes some creative liberties. Rather than controlling Gon and Killua directly, the player is a novice hunter invited to the mansion of a mysterious man named . He tasks you with solving the riddle of the "Greed Island" he claims to have created. You are then suddenly thrown into the game world, having to unravel its puzzles alongside other hunters, including the series' main protagonists. You must collect party members, gather items, and strive to escape this perilous island alive .
When Konami released this title in late 2000, the Hunter x Hunter manga was still in its early years, and the original 1999 anime adaptation was actively airing. Curiously, the official Greed Island arc had not yet concluded in the manga.
