In 1989, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was already home to the Children's Peace Monument, unveiled in 1958, but the momentum of peace never stopped. The cranes had become a global symbol. Students in schools from America to Europe, inspired by the 1989 re-tellings of her story and the continued push for nuclear disarmament, sent thousands of paper cranes to Hiroshima. Sadako Sasaki was born on January 7, 1943, in Hiroshima. She was just two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. While she survived the initial explosion, she was exposed to the "black rain" of radiation. The Diagnosis (1954–1955) "Number one thousand," she whispered
