AutoCAD Structural Detailing (ASD) 2015 acts as a bridge between structural design and fabrication. While AutoCAD is a general-purpose drafting tool, ASD 2015 offers specialized tools that understand structural components—such as beams, columns, connections, and rebar—allowing users to create 3D models and automatically generate 2D documentation.
Autodesk explained this decision as part of its strategy to focus on more advanced, integrated solutions. The company stated that while ASD was a solution for customers needing "basic modeling and documentation to generate steel and rebar shop drawings as well as concrete modeling," they were "aggressively investing in new structural detailing solutions that support a wider range of modeling and documentation needs". Autodesk believed these new solutions were "better suited to meet the range of our global customer needs".
