For a long time, MP3 was the default standard for internet audio. However, an MP3 stream requires at least 128kbps to sound acceptable in stereo. For a broadcaster with thousands of concurrent listeners, streaming at 128kbps results in massive monthly bandwidth bills.

In the early 2000s, internet radio primarily relied on the MP3 format, which required high bitrates (such as 128 kbps or higher) to achieve acceptable sound quality. This presented severe bandwidth challenges for both broadcasters and listeners with slow internet connections.
