Peter Gabriel, So (2012 Remastered) in High-Resolution Audio

In the 24-bit FLAC, the intricate percussion in "Sledgehammer" is tighter and cleaner. You can distinctly hear the separation between the brass section and the funk bassline, allowing for a more immersive listening experience.

To mark the 25th anniversary of his 1986 landmark album, Peter Gabriel oversaw a comprehensive reissue campaign in October 2012. This project treated "So" with the respect it deserved, restoring the track listing as Gabriel and his co-producer Daniel Lanois originally intended. For the first time, the thrilling 1987 live concert from Athens was fully restored from over 150 reels of 35mm negative and released in 5.1 surround sound. A "DNA CD" demystified the album's creation, and 180g vinyl completed the package. At its heart was a brand-new 2012 remaster of the original album.

It was a myth. A legend whispered in audiophile forums on the dark web. The "Lost 2012 Master."

It wasn't Kate Bush.

While those exist for some albums, the 2012 remaster of So was specifically optimized for 48kHz. Using a higher sample rate than the master tape’s effective resolution doesn’t add information; it just creates larger files. The 24/48 sweet spot is widely considered the practical maximum audible benefit.
