Born on March 24, 1944, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Emir Kusturica grew up in a multicultural family. His father, a Bosnian Muslim, and his mother, a Croatian Catholic, instilled in him a deep appreciation for diverse cultures. Kusturica's interest in filmmaking began at the University of Sarajevo, where he studied drama and film. He later moved to Czechoslovakia to study at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU).
