The movement soon codified its practices in a uniquely German way—with rules. As one journalist put it, "German nudism is actually as strict as everything else in this country." In 1920, Germany established its first official nude beach on the island of Sylt, followed by events like the first international nudity congress in 1929. While the Nazis later suppressed the movement due to "immorality" concerns, FKK experienced a major resurgence after World War II, especially in the GDR, where the communist government actively promoted it as a wholesome, egalitarian practice for the proletariat.

Body positivity emerged as a powerful counter-movement. It demanded the radical acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, race, gender, or ability. However, early body-positive spaces sometimes struggled to integrate active health practices, fearing that focusing on nutrition or fitness inherently signaled a desire to change one's shape to appease societal standards.
