The film follows Norbit Albert Rice (Eddie Murphy), a timid and kind-hearted man who was abandoned as a baby and raised in an orphanage run by a Chinese restaurant owner, Mr. Wong (also played by Murphy). As a child, he falls for his sweet friend, Kate Thomas (Thandiwe Newton), but their paths diverge when she is adopted. Years later, Norbit is unhappily married to the domineering, plus-sized Rasputia (another one of Murphy's roles), who bullies him along with her thuggish brothers. His life is turned upside down when Kate, now a beautiful and successful businesswoman, returns to town to buy the orphanage that is about to be demolished. The story follows Norbit's humorous and heartwarming journey as he seizes this second chance at true love while trying to escape the clutches of his monstrous wife.
